When to book an independent prescribing pharmacist

Book if you need same-day assessment and a prescription without waiting for a GP appointment. Our independent prescribers can assess and treat:

  • Skin infections such as impetigo, infected insect bites and acne
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Ear, nose and throat infections including sinusitis and sore throat
  • Eye infections such as conjunctivitis
  • Respiratory conditions including chest infections and asthma reviews
  • Allergies and hay fever needing prescription treatment
  • Erectile dysfunction and hair loss
  • Travel health needs including antimalarials and vaccinations
  • Contraception, including emergency and bridging supply
  • Repeat prescription reviews and medication adjustments

If your condition falls outside our prescribers' scope, we refer you to your GP or a specialist.

What is an independent prescribing pharmacist?

An independent prescribing pharmacist has completed additional postgraduate training giving them the legal authority to prescribe prescription-only medicines. They carry out clinical assessments, make diagnoses and write prescriptions in the same way as a doctor, working within their area of clinical competence and following the same prescribing guidelines as GPs.

What happens at your consultation

Walk in and ask to see the prescribing pharmacist, or book ahead if you prefer. In a private consultation room they will ask about your symptoms, how long you have had them and what makes them better or worse, then review your medical history, current medicines and allergies.

Depending on your condition they may examine you, for example checking blood pressure, looking at your skin, ears or throat, or listening to your chest. They will explain their findings and treatment options, and if a prescription is needed it is written and dispensed on the spot, so you leave with your medication.

Is it safe to see a pharmacist prescriber instead of a GP?

Yes. Independent prescribers are regulated by the General Pharmaceutical Council, follow the same clinical guidelines as doctors and must maintain their competence through ongoing professional development. They prescribe only within their areas of expertise and refer on when further investigation is needed. Consultations are documented and, with your consent, shared with your GP so your medical record stays complete.
