NHS UTI Service | Urinary Tract Infection Treatment | Allied Pharmacies

The NHS UTI Service allows eligible patients to receive assessment, advice and treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) directly from a pharmacist without needing to see a GP. UTIs are common infections affecting the bladder or urinary system and can cause symptoms such as pain when passing urine, frequent urination and lower abdominal discomfort.

Through the NHS Pharmacy First programme, trained pharmacists can assess symptoms and, when appropriate, provide treatment for UTIs quickly and conveniently.

At Allied Pharmacies, pharmacists provide free NHS consultations for UTI symptoms, helping patients receive advice and treatment without waiting for a GP appointment.

Use the postcode search to find your nearest Allied Pharmacy offering NHS UTI consultations and treatment.

What Is a Urinary Tract Infection (UTI)?

A urinary tract infection occurs when bacteria enter the urinary system, affecting the bladder, urethra or kidneys. UTIs are particularly common in women and are often referred to as cystitis when the bladder is affected.

UTIs are usually caused by bacteria from the digestive tract entering the urinary system. Most infections are mild but can become more serious if untreated.

Common Symptoms of a UTI

Symptoms of a urinary tract infection may include:

  • A burning or stinging sensation when passing urine
  • Needing to urinate more frequently or urgently
  • Passing small amounts of urine frequently
  • Cloudy, dark or strong-smelling urine
  • Lower abdominal discomfort or pressure

If symptoms become severe or include fever, back pain or blood in the urine, urgent medical advice should be sought.

Who Can Use the NHS UTI Service?

The NHS Pharmacy First service allows pharmacists to assess and treat uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16 to 64 years.

To use the service, patients must typically:

  • Be female aged 16–64 years
  • Have symptoms of a simple (uncomplicated) urinary tract infection
  • Not be pregnant
  • Not have recurrent UTIs requiring specialist care

If your symptoms fall outside these criteria, the pharmacist may refer you to a GP or other healthcare service for further assessment.

When to Seek Medical Advice

You should seek further medical help if:

  • Symptoms last longer than 48 hours after starting treatment
  • You develop fever, chills or back pain
  • You are pregnant or have a weakened immune system
  • You experience recurrent UTIs

The pharmacist may refer you to a GP or urgent care service if additional treatment is required.
