Shingles Vaccine | Shingles Vaccination Service | Allied Pharmacies

Shingles is a painful viral infection that causes a blistering rash and nerve pain, often affecting older adults. It is caused by the varicella-zoster virus, the same virus that causes chickenpox. After someone has chickenpox, the virus remains dormant in the body and can reactivate later in life as shingles.

At Allied Pharmacies, our pharmacists provide a Shingles Vaccination Service to help protect against shingles and its complications.

The vaccine can significantly reduce your risk of developing shingles and may also reduce the severity of symptoms if the infection occurs.

What Is the Shingles Vaccine?

The shingles vaccine protects against herpes zoster (shingles), a condition that can cause severe nerve pain and long-lasting complications.

The most commonly used vaccine is Shingrix, a non-live vaccine that provides strong and long-lasting protection against shingles.

The vaccination course usually involves two injections given several weeks apart, helping the immune system build protection against the virus.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to prevent shingles and reduce the risk of complications such as post-herpetic neuralgia, a condition that causes long-term nerve pain.

Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?

Shingles becomes more common with age because immunity to the virus decreases over time.

In the UK, the shingles vaccine is offered through the NHS to:

  • Adults turning 65
  • Adults aged 70 to 79 years
  • Adults aged 18 or over with severely weakened immune systems

People who are not eligible for the NHS programme may still be able to receive the vaccine privately through pharmacies and travel clinics.

Many pharmacies recommend vaccination for adults aged 50 and over who want to reduce their risk of shingles.

Why Is the Shingles Vaccine Important?

Shingles can cause significant health problems, particularly for older adults.

Complications may include:

  • Severe nerve pain (post-herpetic neuralgia)
  • Vision problems if the eye is affected
  • Hearing loss Skin infections
  • Long-term nerve damage

Vaccination helps protect against these complications and reduces the likelihood of severe disease.

Shingles Vaccine FAQ’s

When will I know to come back for my second dosage?
At the time you visit us for your first dosage, the pharmacist will arrange a time for you to come again for your second dose. Usually, the time for this is between 6 to 12 months however depending on your weakened immune system the time in between may be closer.
We advise you to speak to a pharmacist at your local Allied Pharmacy for their professional guidance. Inform the pharmacist of your previous dosages and how long since you were given them.
The common side effects listed above don’t tend to last long, as improvements start to happen within 2 to 3 days. If you are having trouble with your symptoms, don’t hesitate to contact us or visit for pharmacist recommendations on treatment.
