Ear Microsuction & Ear Wax Removal Near You | Allied Pharmacies

Blocked ears caused by excess ear wax can lead to reduced hearing, discomfort, tinnitus and a feeling of pressure in the ear. According to the NHS, ear wax build-up is a common problem that can affect anyone, but it is particularly common in older adults, hearing aid users and people with narrow or hairy ear canals.

Many GP surgeries no longer offer routine ear wax removal, leaving patients struggling to find accessible treatment. At Allied Pharmacies, our trained professionals provide ear microsuction — one of the safest and most effective methods of ear wax removal — at convenient pharmacy locations near you, with no GP referral needed.

What Is Ear Microsuction?

Ear microsuction is a safe, gentle procedure used to remove excess or impacted ear wax from the ear canal. A trained professional uses a small suction device, often guided by a microscope or loupe magnification, to carefully draw the wax out of the ear.

Unlike older methods such as ear syringing (which used water pressure), microsuction does not introduce any liquid into the ear canal. This makes it a preferred option for patients with a history of ear infections, perforated eardrums or grommets.

The NHS lists microsuction as one of the professional treatments available for ear wax removal, alongside irrigation and manual instrument removal.

Symptoms of Ear Wax Build-Up

Ear wax (cerumen) is produced naturally to protect the ear canal from dust, bacteria and water. In most cases it falls out on its own, but sometimes it can build up and cause problems. The NHS advises that symptoms of ear wax build-up may include:

  • A feeling of fullness or blockage in the ear
  • Reduced hearing or muffled sounds
  • Earache or pain in the affected ear
  • Ringing or buzzing in the ears (tinnitus)
  • Dizziness or a sense of imbalance (vertigo)
  • Itchiness inside the ear canal

If you experience any of these symptoms, professional ear wax removal can provide quick relief. The NHS advises against using cotton buds, fingers or any objects to try to remove ear wax yourself, as this can push the wax deeper and cause further problems.

Who Is Most Likely to Experience Ear Wax Build-Up?

While ear wax build-up can affect anyone, some people are more prone to it than others. You may be at higher risk if you:

  • Wear hearing aids, earbuds or in-ear headphones regularly
  • Have narrow or unusually shaped ear canals
  • Have a lot of hair in your ear canals
  • Have a skin condition affecting the scalp or around the ears, such as eczema or psoriasis
  • Have had previous ear surgery or ear infections
  • Are an older adult (ear wax tends to become drier and harder with age)

If you experience recurring ear wax build-up, regular microsuction appointments can help keep your ears clear and your hearing sharp.

What Happens During an Ear Microsuction Appointment?

Getting ear microsuction at Allied Pharmacies is a quick, straightforward process:

  • Assessment — your practitioner will ask about your symptoms, ear history and check your ears using an otoscope to assess the level of wax build-up
  • Preparation — if the wax is particularly hard or impacted, you may be advised to use olive oil ear drops for a few days before your appointment to soften the wax. This helps the microsuction process work more effectively
  • Microsuction procedure — using a low-pressure suction device and magnification, the practitioner gently removes the ear wax from your ear canal. The procedure is usually painless, though you may hear a mild suction noise
  • Aftercare — once the wax is removed, your practitioner will check your ears again and provide advice on how to care for your ears going forward, including tips to reduce future build-up

The entire appointment typically takes between 15 and 30 minutes. Most patients notice an immediate improvement in their hearing after the procedure.

Microsuction vs Ear Syringing: What Is the Difference?

Ear syringing (also known as ear irrigation) was once the most common method of ear wax removal offered by GP surgeries. It involves flushing the ear canal with a jet of water to dislodge the wax. While still available, many healthcare providers now prefer microsuction because:

  • Microsuction does not use water, making it safer for patients with perforated eardrums, grommets or a history of ear infections
  • The practitioner has a direct view of the ear canal throughout the procedure, allowing greater precision
  • There is a lower risk of ear canal damage compared to syringing
  • Microsuction can remove hard or impacted wax that syringing may struggle with
  • The procedure is generally quicker and more comfortable for the patient

The NHS recognises microsuction as a professional treatment for ear wax removal. If you are unsure which method is right for you, our pharmacy team will advise you during your consultation.

How to Prepare for Your Ear Microsuction Appointment

To get the best results from your ear microsuction appointment, the NHS recommends softening the wax beforehand:

  • Use 2 to 3 drops of medical-grade olive oil or almond oil in the affected ear (do not use almond oil if you have a nut allergy)
  • Lie on your side with the affected ear facing upwards and let the drops sit for 5 to 10 minutes
  • Repeat this 3 to 4 times a day for 3 to 5 days before your appointment

Softening the wax makes the microsuction process faster, more comfortable and more effective. Your pharmacist may also recommend specific ear drops available over the counter.

Aftercare: Looking After Your Ears

After your ear microsuction appointment, you can help keep your ears healthy and reduce the risk of future wax build-up by following these tips based on NHS guidance:

  • Do not insert cotton buds, fingers or any objects into your ear canal
  • Use olive oil drops once or twice a week if you are prone to wax build-up, to help keep the wax soft
  • Keep your ears dry when swimming or showering if you have a history of ear infections
  • If you wear hearing aids, clean them regularly and have your ears checked every 6 to 12 months
  • Avoid ear candles — the NHS confirms there is no evidence they work and they can cause injury
