What is an independent prescribing pharmacist?

A qualified independent prescribing pharmacist can consult and prescribe patients with prescription treatments.

However, the scope of conditions the independent prescribing pharmacist can prescribe, depends on their practice and the health conditions they feel comfortable with.

How can I see my independent prescribing pharmacist?

Currently, there is no system to be able to schedule an appointment with your pharmacy’s independent prescribing pharmacist.

Therefore, you (the patient) must either call the branch to arrange a visit, or walk-in to your pharmacy that has an independent prescribing pharmacist.

Would I need to pay for my prescriptions?

In England, this service is not NHS funded. This means patients would be expected to pay for their prescriptions.

However, for costs regarding the prescription treatments, you would need to ask a member of staff when you visit, as these may vary.

What conditions can my independent prescribing pharmacist prescribe me with?

The conditions differ based on your independent prescribing pharmacist’s scope of practice.

For information about certain conditions you can receive prescriptions for, we advise you to contact your branch by ringing them directly.

You can access contact details via the Find a Pharmacy tab on our website, to do so.
