The symptoms of a urinary tract infection can vary in severity but typically include a strong, persistent urge to urinate, a burning or stinging sensation when passing urine, passing small amounts of urine frequently, urine that appears cloudy, dark, or has a strong smell, blood in your urine which may appear pink or red, pain or pressure in your lower abdomen or back, and feeling generally unwell, tired, or achy. In more severe cases, where the infection has spread to the kidneys, you may experience a high temperature, chills, nausea or vomiting, and pain in your sides or lower back. A kidney infection is a more serious condition that requires prompt medical attention. If you are experiencing mild to moderate UTI symptoms, your pharmacist can help. If your symptoms are severe, worsening, or you suspect a kidney infection, you should contact your GP, call NHS 111, or attend an urgent care centre.
