What is yellow fever?
Yellow fever is a serious infection that can potentially be fatal. This is caused by being bitten by an infected mosquito carrying the yellow fever virus. These mosquitoes primarily bite during the day, shortly after sunrise and just after sunset.
If you are travelling to an area where yellow fever is very common, the Yellow Fever Vaccine should be had in plenty of time before your trip. This vaccine is available at an Allied Pharmacy offering this service to help you stay protected and safe while travelling.
Who should have the vaccine?
Parts of the world where Yellow Fever is highly common, includes:
If you are travelling to these areas, a Yellow Fever Vaccine is needed, as not only will it protect you while you’re away but a certificate proving you have been vaccinated may be required.
What are the symptoms of yellow fever?
Fever, headache, nausea, vomiting, aches and pains, a loss of appetite and a general feeling of being unwell are some symptoms of yellow fever. This is like the flu. However, within 24 hours more symptoms can develop causing serious illness like:
These more serious symptoms can be fatal, and therefore, if you’re experiencing any of the list above, medical attention is immediately needed for treatment.
When do I need to have my Yellow Fever Vaccine?
From the age of 9 months, the Yellow Fever Vaccine is recommended for those travelling to high-risk areas or a country where a certificate proving you’ve been vaccinated against yellow fever is required.
You should be vaccinated at least ten days before travelling to these destinations, to enable the vaccine to become effective and work. However, a conflict with the MMR vaccine can happen if there isn’t a 4-week gap available in between for both doses.
It is best to speak with our pharmacist as soon as possible to avoid any such conflicts and have enough time for all necessary travel vaccines to take place.
