What is the pneumococcal vaccine?

The pneumococcal vaccine helps prevent serious infections caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria, including pneumonia, meningitis or sepsis.

Therefore, having a pneumococcal vaccine provides you with better protection.

Who can have the pneumococcal vaccine?

Under the NHS, this vaccine is recommended for:

  • Babies
  • Adults aged 65 and older
  • People with certain long-term conditions, such as chronic liver, breathing, kidney and heart complications
  • People with diabetes
  • People with weakened immune systems including those with HIV, those undergoing chemotherapy or those who have had organ transplants
  • People with cerebrospinal fluid leaks
  • People with cochlear implants

Further guidance on who is eligible for a pneumococcal vaccine can be found on the NHS website.

However, as this service is offered privately anyone aged 7 months above and is at risk of developing invasive pneumococcal disease can have this vaccine.

How effective is the pneumococcal vaccine?

This vaccine is the best protection against pneumococcal infections, as it covers both common and serious infections.

Typically, protection tends to kick in around three weeks after having the vaccination. For adults only one dose of this vaccination is sufficient however, for babies they may need two doses.

What are the side effects of the pneumococcal vaccine?

Like all vaccinations, there are common side effects that can occur. The most common that can arise from the pneumococcal vaccine include:

    • A swelling or pain from where the injection was given
    • A high temperature
    • Fatigue and tiredness
    • A loss of appetite

It is important to be aware of potential side effects from an injection such as anaphylaxis, a severe allergic reaction. If you or someone you know are experiencing anaphylaxis, please immediately contact the person who vaccinated you – as they are highly trained and able to treat you.

      Pneumococcal Vaccine FAQ’s

How is the pneumococcal vaccine administered?
The pneumococcal vaccine is given as a simple injection, usually into the upper arm. It’s a quick jab, just like the flu vaccine, and the whole process only takes a few seconds. There’s no special prep needed before getting the vaccine, and you can go about your day as usual once it’s done!
If you\'re young and healthy, you might not need the pneumococcal vaccine right now, but it really depends on your situation. For most healthy adults under 65, the risk of serious pneumococcal infections is low, so the vaccine is usually only recommended if you have certain medical conditions (see the list above). That said, some people choose to get it privately for extra protection—especially if they smoke, travel frequently, or just want to lower their risk of pneumonia.
Most people can have the pneumococcal vaccine without any issues, but there are a few exceptions. If you’ve ever had a severe allergic reaction (like anaphylaxis) to a previous dose of the vaccine or any of its ingredients, you should avoid it. For most people, the vaccine is safe and well-tolerated, but if you’re in doubt, a quick chat with our pharmacy team who can help you decide!
