Bridging Contraception Service | Contraceptive Pill From Your Pharmacy | Allied Pharmacies

Bridging contraception is a short-term supply of the contraceptive pill provided by a pharmacist to help women maintain contraceptive cover while they arrange a longer-term contraception plan. It is designed to fill the gap when you need contraception quickly but cannot get a GP appointment straight away.

At Allied Pharmacies, our trained pharmacists can supply bridging contraception directly, without the need for a GP referral or prescription. The service is confidential, convenient and available at participating pharmacies across the UK.

What Is Bridging Contraception?

Bridging contraception is a short-term supply of oral contraception, typically the progestogen-only pill (also known as the mini pill), provided by a pharmacist. The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service allows pharmacists to supply up to 3 months of oral contraception to help bridge the gap while you arrange an ongoing prescription with your GP or sexual health clinic.

This service was introduced to improve access to contraception and reduce unplanned pregnancies, particularly for women who face delays in getting a GP appointment. It ensures you are not left without contraceptive cover during the waiting period.

When Is Bridging Contraception Used?

The bridging contraception service may be suitable for you if:

  • You have recently used emergency contraception (the morning after pill) and need ongoing contraception while you arrange a longer-term plan
  • You have run out of your regular contraceptive pill and cannot get a GP appointment in time
  • You are starting contraception for the first time and want to begin protection before your GP appointment
  • You are switching contraceptive methods and need cover during the transition
  • You are unable to access your usual GP or sexual health clinic

Bridging contraception is designed as a temporary measure. Your pharmacist will advise you on arranging a longer-term contraception plan with your GP or sexual health service.

How the Bridging Contraception Service Works

Getting bridging contraception at Allied Pharmacies is quick, confidential and straightforward.

  • Consultation — your pharmacist will have a private, confidential conversation with you about your contraceptive needs, medical history and any current medications
  • Assessment — the pharmacist will check that oral contraception is safe and suitable for you, including checking your blood pressure if needed
  • Supply — if appropriate, the pharmacist will supply up to 3 months of oral contraception, typically the progestogen-only pill
  • Ongoing advice — your pharmacist will explain how to take the pill correctly, discuss potential side effects and advise you on arranging a longer-term contraception plan

The service is free of charge when provided through the NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service at participating pharmacies.

Types of Contraceptive Pill Available

Through the bridging contraception service, pharmacists typically supply the progestogen-only pill. However, Allied Pharmacies can also provide advice on other forms of oral contraception:

  • Progestogen-only pill (mini pill) — taken every day with no break. It works by thickening the mucus in the cervix to prevent sperm reaching an egg and, in some cases, preventing ovulation. Suitable for most women, including those who cannot take oestrogen
  • Combined oral contraceptive pill — contains both oestrogen and progestogen. Usually taken for 21 days followed by a 7-day break. Not suitable for everyone, particularly women over 35 who smoke, or those with certain medical conditions

Your pharmacist will discuss which type is most suitable for you based on your health, lifestyle and preferences.

Who Can Access Bridging Contraception?

The NHS Pharmacy Contraception Service is available to women and people with a uterus who need short-term oral contraception. The service is confidential and available to people of all ages, including those under 16, in line with NHS guidelines on young people and contraception.

Your pharmacist will carry out a brief health assessment to ensure the contraception is safe for you. If oral contraception is not suitable, your pharmacist will refer you to your GP or a sexual health clinic for alternative options.

Side Effects of the Contraceptive Pill

Like all medications, the contraceptive pill can cause side effects, although many women experience none at all. According to the NHS, common side effects of the progestogen-only pill may include:

  • Irregular periods or spotting between periods, particularly in the first few months
  • Breast tenderness
  • Headaches
  • Mood changes
  • Nausea
  • Acne or changes in skin

These side effects usually settle within the first 2 to 3 months as your body adjusts. If side effects persist or become bothersome, your pharmacist can advise on alternative options. The contraceptive pill does not cause long-term weight gain and does not affect your future fertility.

What Happens After Bridging Contraception?

Bridging contraception is designed as a temporary measure to keep you protected while you arrange a longer-term contraception plan. During your consultation, your pharmacist will advise you on the next steps, which may include:

  • Booking an appointment with your GP to discuss ongoing contraceptive options including the pill, implant, injection, coil (IUD or IUS) or patch
  • Attending a sexual health clinic for a full contraception review
  • Returning to the pharmacy for a repeat supply if you need more time to arrange your longer-term plan

Your pharmacist will ensure there is no gap in your contraceptive cover and will help you understand all the options available to you. The NHS provides a full range of contraception methods free of charge through your GP or sexual health clinic.

Contraception and Confidentiality

All contraception consultations at Allied Pharmacies are completely confidential. Your pharmacist will not share any information about your visit with anyone, including family members or your GP, unless you give your consent or there is a safeguarding concern.

The NHS confirms that contraception services are confidential for people of all ages, including those under 16. Young people can access bridging contraception without parental consent, provided the pharmacist is satisfied that the individual understands the information and advice given.

If you feel uncomfortable discussing contraception with your GP, your local pharmacy offers a private, non-judgmental alternative where you can get the help you need quickly and discreetly.

Bridging Contraception FAQ’s

When will my follow-up appointment be?
Your follow-up appointment will be set after the three-month trial, however, if you feel you need to speak with the pharmacist in between then, you can pop into the pharmacy. The follow-up appointment is important as the pharmacist will review your progress and discuss the next steps such as continuing the pill or looking at alternative contraceptive options.
During the three months, if you wish to stop taking the oral contraceptive pill, we advise you to still use other forms of contraception to avoid unwanted pregnancy. However, when it comes to stopping oral contraception, you can stop during the middle or end of your pack, but it is important to expect and plan for the side effects and changes in your cycle that will occur.
As part of this service, you can access: Combined oral contraceptive pill (COC), Progesterone-only pill (POP), Emergency Contraception.
