Malaria in India
Malaria is present in many parts of India and is carried by mosquitoes that bite mainly between dusk and dawn. Risk is generally higher in rural areas, in the north-east, and during and after the monsoon. There is no travel vaccine for malaria, so protection relies on antimalarial tablets (such as atovaquone/proguanil, doxycycline or mefloquine) plus strict bite avoidance. Your pharmacist will recommend the tablets that suit your itinerary and health. See the NHS malaria guidance for background.
Monsoon-season risks (roughly June to September)
- Mosquito-borne illness rises - including malaria, dengue and chikungunya. Dengue in particular surges after heavy rain.
- Water-borne illness - flooding increases the risk of typhoid, hepatitis A and travellers' diarrhoea, so food and water hygiene matters even more.
- Bite avoidance is essential - use a DEET-based repellent (up to 50%), cover up at dawn and dusk, and sleep under a net or in air-conditioned rooms.
Frequently asked questions
How far in advance should I get my India travel vaccines?
Ideally 4-8 weeks before you fly, as some courses (such as rabies or hepatitis B) need more than one dose. Last-minute travellers can still benefit, so book as soon as you can.
Are travel vaccines for India free on the NHS?
Some are available on the NHS (such as hepatitis A, typhoid and the Td/IPV booster), while others (rabies, Japanese encephalitis and antimalarial tablets) are private. At Allied Pharmacies we offer both, so you can get everything you need in one visit.
Do I definitely need malaria tablets for India?
It depends on exactly where you're going and the time of year. Your pharmacist will check your itinerary against the latest advice and recommend the right tablets only if you need them.
